There was a time when thousands of Great Green Macaws soared freely in the sky above Costa Rica. Now, there are only about 300 wild ones left in the small Central American country.
Deforestation and illegal pet trade have almost wiped out a once flourishing species.

I was inspired to paint this macaw after I had the opportunity to visit a bird sanctuary in Mexico that does an amazing job rehabilitating confiscated birds from the illegal trade.
